Understanding the Uses, Advantages and Limitations of Internal Pipe Coating

Applying an inside coating on pipes can help prevent corrosion, enhance flow and lessen the buildup of deposits. FBE Coating and Glass flake Coatings are among the two most well-known examples of pipe coatings that are internal to the pipes.

Internal Coatings Have a Specific Purpose:-
  • Internal corrosion mitigation for pipes

  • Flow increase

  • To decrease the creation of deposits

Pipe Varieties Linings / Internal Coatings:-

  • Epoxy Fusion Bonded (FBE) Coating

  • Coatings made of Glass Flake (Chemflake, Belzona, etc.)

  • Lining (Polyethylene) | ROTO Lining

Instructions for Using FBE Coatings

Prior to blast cleaning it is required to make sure there is clean of grease and oil. To eliminate scale, rust or any other foreign matter that may be present on the surface of the pipe, the pipe must be cleaned by blast before Pipe Coating. This provides the pipe with an attractive appearance. This kind of coating needs roughness levels of between 50-100 microns. Spray guns can be used to paint the interior of pipes after they have been cleaned using the pressure of compressed air.

This helps ensure uniform distribution of the paint on the pipe that has been heated and with Cementitious Waterproofing. The pipe turns along its longitudinal axis on an ongoing basis. When it comes in proximity to the surface the powder melts and turns into liquid. This liquid FBE coating sticks to the pipe's surface and becomes an unbreakable layer in just a few seconds. Fusion Bonding is a method which employs this technique.

FBE Coatings offer many benefits are some of them are:

  • The higher temperatures will not pose an issue for this finish.

  • The coating is impervious to corrosion.

  • It is a good choice for pipes with diameters ranging between 2 and 48 inches.

  • A broad range of thicknesses is possible with this item.

  • In soil conditions it provides chemical resistance, as well as robust impact resistance.

Coating using internal glass flakes

PCS-8 in SP-1246 refers to the coating as Chemflake/Belzona. In general, this kind of coating can stand temperatures of up to 93 degrees Celsius. Pipes with greater diameters may benefit from an interior coating made with glass particles. The flanged pipe spool is commonly used to connect pipes that are not flanged and then for Pipe Coating.

Application of an Internal Glass Flake Coating

Glass flake coatings that are internal are applied or utilized in the following ways In the following ways:

  • The process of blast cleaning can be used to obtain the roughness range of 75 to 130 microns.

  • A sprayer that is airless can be used for spraying.

  • Brush: It is recommended to employ a brush to apply stripe coating and apply small portions of the coating. To make sure that the desired thickness of dry film is reached, Cementitious Waterproofing and care is exercised.

  • Drying time of one application is around 24 hours.

Benefits of Glass Flake Coating Internally:-

  • It is extremely resistant to solvents and chemicals.

  • The exact bonding and weathering characteristics of the product.

  • It is permeabilized to the outside world.

  • The retention of finish of this coating is outstanding.
